La prima cosa che Piton chiede a Harry è “Potter! Che cosa ottengo se aggiungo radice di asfodelo in polvere a un infuso di artemisia (assenzio)?” Secondo il linguaggio dei fiori vittoriano, l’asfodelo è un tipo di giglio (in inglese lily) il cui significato è “I miei rimpianti ti seguiranno nella tomba” mentre assenzio significa ‘assenza’ e inoltre in genere simboleggiava dolore amaro. Se questi vengono combinati, si ottiene “Rimpiango amaramente la morte di Lily”.
